A 14th century fishing village divided by the Murmursundet strait which gave the village its first name.
A place that in modern times has become nationally known for Sundomböckling (smoked herring) and boats.
An exciting village on the edge of the 520 million year old meteorite crater Söderfjärden that attracts geologists, astronomers and ornithologists. There are many ways to describe Sundom.

Sundom is today a dynamic, growing village in Vaasa on the west coast of Finland. The old fishing, working and small-scale farming village's red cottages and farms are now complemented by new small houses in varying styles.
In 2020, the village won the Swedish Yle summer competition Bästa hemknuten i Svenskfinland. The village has an active community life and a diverse range of services. Traditions and events create a sense of community and meeting places in the village.
The village's settlement is extensive and runs from Näset beach in the east through Yttersundom to Kronvikstranden in the west and south from Yttersundom through Översundom in two stretches along the western and northern edge of Söderfjärden. Islet, skerries and water cover 2/3 of the village's area. In the Sundom archipelago there are about 1,000 summer cottages, most of which are on leased land owned by the Sundom partnership. The village's total area amounts to about 23,000 ha, of which 1,460 ha are cultivated land, 6,260 ha are forests and about 15,000 ha are water.
The village offers diverse nature experiences, from the vast archipelago to unique nature trails at Öjen and Öjberget or bird watching at Söderfjärden's meteorite crater

Two-thirds of Sundom's surface area is made up of islets, skerries and water. The archipelago is home to over 1,000 summer cottages, some of which are now inhabited year-round. Photo: Niklas falk.
From the beginning of 1973, Sundom became part of the city of Vaasa, having previously been part of the municipality of Solf. Shortly afterwards, in 1976, a new road connection was opened across the Myrgrund, which significantly shortened the distance between the city centre and Sundom. Passenger boat traffic across Stadsfjärden (city bay) became a thing of the past and commuters made their entrance. The new proximity to the city made the village an attractive district.
Sundom is a growing village. In just over forty years - from 1980 to 2022, the number of inhabitants in Sundom doubled from about 1,300 to about 2,600 people. The growth was 100%. Few places in our country can show such an expansion. The fishing village has become modern but has retained its fine rural character.
The purpose of the association is to promote cultural, social, and environmental endeavors in the local area, as well as to foster a sense of community and well-being in the region.
